Avant et Apres by Isabey c1932

Avant et Apres by Isabey: launched around 1932. the name means "Before and After" in French.

Fragrance Composition:

So what does it smell like? I have no published notes on this fragrance.

The New Yorker, 1932:
"Isabey: Avant et Apres, new and exciting.... "

Bottle:

In the 1932 ad below, you can see that Avant et Apres is housed inside of a squat, crystal square with truncated corners, fitted with a flat, faceted stopper. Its paper label is in the Art Deco style preferred by Isabey at the time. It was available in three sizes:
  • 1/2 oz Parfum (retailed for $4.00 in 1932)
  • 1 oz Parfum (retailed for $7.50 in 1932)
  • 2 oz Parfum (retailed for $12.00 in 1932)

Fate of the Fragrance:

Discontinued, date unknown. I could not find a newspaper ad past 1938 for this perfume. I believe that the production and importation was halted and ultimately stopped on this fragrance.

Resurrected Version from 2022:

The fragrance was re-released as its original name, Avant et Apres, and was created by perfumer Marie Schnirer.

Fragrance Composition:

So what does it smell like? It is classified as a floral woody musk fragrance for women.

  • Top notes: freesia, iodine accord, frangipani flower
  • Middle notes: jasmine sambac, ylang ylang, orange blossom, monoi accord
  • Base notes: vanilla, musk, benzoin, ambroxan

Bottles:

It is housed in the standard Isabey flacon, a modernized square based on the original 1920s flacon by Bohemian crystal manufacturer, Ludwig Moser. The modern edition is cloaked in pure white and fitted with a white cap and features a luxe gold tone label. The name Isabey, in its characteristic signature script, is molded into the front of the flacon.
